It's true; it's an overrated work. I'm much more of a deep theology fan (despite being a political and theological conservative), so I feel like it never really offered me anything, despite being heralded by (and this may have something to do with it) more non-denominational, generic "evangelicals." It wasn't intellectually rigorous, nor was the man, an undeniably brilliant guy, trying to make it so. "The Abolition Of Man" and "The Screwtape Letters" are much more invigorating, deep, and entertaining. Give the former a try, at least, since he tries to find common ground in the beginning with people who have never been religious and moves on from there.
