That reminds me though of the time in college when we all went to see Se7en...came home so freaked out and depressed we decided to watch a cartoon....that cartoon? Grave of the Fireflies. Worst night ever.

Children of Men an Pan’s Labyrinth were the only 2 movies worth a spit that I’ve seen in the last 2 or 3 years. And I saw them both in the same weekend!

Wow, that must've been one spirit-lifting weekend. Why didn't you throw in Grave of the Fireflies while you were at it? Both Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth are ultimately postive (and I guess Pan's Labyrinth is up for debate in that), but they make you go through a lot to get to the happy.

I didn’t even notice the lack of cuts until people had pointed them out to me - to me, that’s the perfect long shot - so immersive you become completely unaware of the craft.

What impressed me was that even if you do notice the craft, it still works. There were a few sequences, the car attack in particular, where I was left thinking, "I can't believe that just happened!" for two reasons: first, because of the story, and then once I realized how much went into making that shot.

And what's really brilliant about it is that by the end of the movie, I stopped noticing the cuts at all. It felt like the entire thing was just one long, uninterrupted camera following this one guy.

Totally agree, re: Children of Men - it's the new Blade Runner, I think, in terms of its lasting appeal. Hell, it may be better than Blade Runner. The thing I loved about the long shots is that they served a purpose other than just, "Hey, check out this crazy long shot! I'm awesome!" They really made the viewer feel like they were part of the experience, and frankly, I didn't even notice the lack of cuts until people had pointed them out to me - to me, that's the perfect long shot - so immersive you become completely unaware of the craft.

And Clive Owen... damn.
