I didn't hate it as much as you, but I do think they need to stop with the flashbacks unless they reveal something really important or at least something fun. I think they've stuck with the flashback formula because that's what used to work, but it doesn't anymore, so they should ease up on it.

I also hope that the Others will eventually just tell the Losties, "ALRIGHT! Obviously, the torture stuff isn't working; you keep coming back. WE DON'T WANT YOU AROUND, OK? YOU MAKE BAD THINGS HAPPEN. Just leave us and our pretty houses alone....Locke!!! Step away from that. Sheesh!"

I think it all goes back to the "need" to stretch the story as much as possible--shown in that interview you linked to before. In the past, they did it by stretching out the island-events with flashbacks that took up nearly half the episodes, combined with tricks like the beginning of the second season, when they were able to stretch out the exact same hatch confrontation with Desmond over 3 episodes. Flashbacks are shorter now and the stories (excepting Desmond and maybe Juliette) also seem like filler. Now it looks like they're resorting to 24-like ways to stretch a story--killing/blowing up important-looking plot points (and more points if you can build up said pseudo-importance in the same episode where you get rid of the plot element).

But who knows, maybe they can retcon some real importance out of this... if eyepatch man does not die--Russian-focused flashbacks could be interesting. Danielle remains interesting. And if Clugh's death does not mean she's written out, it could be interesting in the way that Libby is still interesting...

But yeah, I agree--my interest is also starting to wane.
