I travelled to Tittybong for Tittybong Cup Day (Caulfield Cup Day in Melbourne) and had a super time. boy, do those local know how to enjoy themselves. 5 races. three and four starters in each race. 4 bookmakers. lots to eat and drink. stayed at The Tittybong International (opposite the sports complex) For a great getaway weekend you cannot ask for more.

I think Sunburned Country is my favorite of his books. He simultaneously painted a picture of a place I just *need* to see, and made me petrified at the thought. I have this idea of something poking me and killing me in an excruciating manner within the first 12 hours on antipodean soil. That whole Irwin business didn't help my perceptions.

The good news is that all of his travel books are of the same quality. Fantastic stuff, he makes it look effortless. It probably is, for him.

I've read all of his books, except for Short History. I started it, and put it down, but I don't remember why exactly. I was still working in systems biology at the time, and I think maybe the simplifications, while well done and a neccessary evil, just made me a little queasy. It's been so long, I don't really remember, and I should give it another whack. Especially since I'm fresh out of Bryson.

I have a silly fantasy about Bill Bryson falling in love with tiki bars and having a chance to chat with him over a Mai Tai at some great old Polynesian restaurant. I just know it could come true some day, I just know it.
