I can finally reply to this post- I googled this commercial because the first time I saw it was with the original ending, and was appalled. The other sites that addressed it were the hick-types guffawing at the "vegan tree huggers" who would be offended by this type of commercial.
But the guy buying tofu at the beginning and eating a carrot at the end is not regarding a message about being specifically vegan, as some are saying. But it is about someone having a healthy lifestyle without being "effeminate" or less of a man. What really gets me though, is that the people making the commercial (or at least the people they're making it for) would actually believe that this healthy-lifestyle guy would feel/react that way, because THEY would. And yes, this is most likely the exact reason people do buy these kind of vehicles. Sad.

What's remarkable is that even with the whole gestalt of Hummer laid bare like that, the ad still manages some subtext. What's the deal with the dude chomping down on that carrot at the end?

Ahahahahahahhaha. Best post ever. I saw one of those Hummer ads on TV the other day (with the woman and the cutting in line), and thought, is this a joke? Like, maybe it was a Toyota Prius ad, or something, but then it ended, and I was completely bamboozled. I didn't really understand *why* until now - but you're totally right, it's because that's *exactly* why I *think* people buy cars like that.
