Bettie Page
The trailer for the movie The Notorious Bettie Page is up at Apple’s site, and I’m intrigued. Here are the reasons I plan on seeing this movie:
- I don’t really know anything about Bettie Page, and I’ve heard the movie isn’t just a boring biopic.
- Come on, look at her!
- All accounts say Gretchen Mol does a great job.
- The trailer makes it look like they do a lot of neat stuff with editing and compositing and such; hopefully it won’t be another one of those bait-and-switch deals where the trailer’s cool but the movie’s dull.
- I’m interested to see what the movie does with it. I Shot Andy Warhol was dull and fairly forgettable, but to its credit it wasn’t sentimental or predictable. Well, except that I could tell going in that it involved Andy Warhol getting shot.
If I’m going to be seeing it, I’d better get myself a wallet chain and some pomade to fit in with the crowd. It’ll be useful in case I want to go to another Reverend Horton Heat concert, too.

Harron directed American Psycho, of course…a movie that I liked at the time, but don’t really need to see again. I guess I could say that about most movies.
I wonder what the real Bettie Page thinks of all this? Hopefully she’s getting some financial reward out of the film…maybe she’ll go on the press junket!

I just can’t get excited about this because I really don’t think Gretchen Mol has half the charisma Bettie Page had in a single photograph. I don’t think she’s sexy at all.

To each his and her respective own, I guess. I think she’s smokin’. But then, I barely knew who Bettie Page was as more than an image before I saw the trailer and started looking at websites, so someone who’s a fan is going to be able to see something else in the original.
What I think the movie does do is make Page out to be a real person instead of just some iconic image. Not just a wide-eyed innocent, and not a bondage freak, but just somebody who knew how good she looked, knew how to use it, and liked having her picture taken. That’s all based on a short trailer with quick clips of a few seconds each, so I don’t know if the movie as a whole keeps that up.

Gretchen Mol…..Harumph! We couldda had Liv! I wanna Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiv! Arwen in Chains! ! ! Baberaham Lincoln in crotchless panties with shoulder straps! The Lipmeister’s Little Girl in more ties than Bangkok! (Heh, heh, he said- SMACK!). Hmmm, gettin’ too much drool ‘cross the QWERTY. But nooooooooooo, they go with Miss Gretchen “Ooooooooo look at me with Matt Damon in Rounders, tee hee” Mol. There is no justice.
